Overview
This residential house is located on “Dardania” Street which connects with “Bash Çarshia” square in the most frequented part of Janjevë/Janjevo. The house, according to the inscription above the entrance gate, was built in 1890 by the Palić family.
It is thought that the architect of this building was of Turkish origin. This family moved from Janjevë/Janjevo to the United States of America during the 20th century, and today most of the family moved from Janjevë/Janjevo to Croatia. For this reason, the inhabitants of Janjevë/Janjevo call this house the “American style” house. There are no divisions on the exterior, but inside the house is divided into three parts, since the families of the three brothers lived there. The house’s first floor once served as a bank and later as a post office, while during the 50s and 60s, it was also used for school classrooms. Today a part of the house is used as a space, the floor on the ground floor is characterized by cobblestones, while the upper floor has the entire floor with boards. In the interior, one of the rooms on the first floor has a wooden ceiling. Its four corners are divided in the shape of a triangle and contain a decorated figure of the sun, while the middle part of the ceiling comes out in the shape of an octagon and consists of rays of different colors. On one of the walls of the house, there is a fireplace that was used for drying meat. An old pear tree still stands in the yard. Even inside the building, there are interesting old furnitures, such as a bed with a metal frame 150 years old according to the owners, and a wooden key, which is said to be the key to the old Catholic Church of Pristina.
